This month, we’re switching things up to revisit and rewind ⏪ to one of our first spotlights to get John’s perspective, one year past his first profile!
How long have you been working with dlivrd?
I have been earning with dlivrd for about [a year] and two months now!
What does your journey into the gig economy look like?
I started using gig economy apps in 2020 when the pandemic started. I just moved back to Austin, Texas. I lived in Nashville for one year prior. A big part of me moving back to Austin was that I’ve always been very interested in web development and software engineering. So I finally was able to start a class to learn the ins and outs of software engineering and web development. This led me back to the gig economy and dlivrd, because of how flexible it is. I can work around schoolwork. This was the first step for me: going to school, learning a new skill, and changing my life.
Actually, my first job ever when I was younger was at a place called Jason’s Deli. But I was a breakfast catering delivery driver when I was 17 years old. I’ve always had experience in the catering delivery industry!
(Author’s Note: John has now been recognized as an Emerald Elite driver in the Austin, TX market and was in attendance at our Engagement Event in July!)
Do you have a favorite dish from a restaurant you’ve completed a catering delivery for?
Me and my fiancée, we love Tacodeli. They have the best breakfast tacos in Austin, in my opinion. Specifically, I love their potato, bacon, and cheese tacos!
What does the #dlivrddifference mean to you?
First and foremost, the platform that dlivrd uses for drivers is a huge difference, because it is far superior to what the other competitors use. It is very user-friendly, and I love the fact that orders are dispatched the day before.
In terms of [the #dlivrddifference] relative to the customers, timing is everything. Customers have meetings at certain times, and I know that being late or even too early can make a huge difference in how well their meetings or office events go.
Bringing people lunch is something that always makes people happy. That’s always a huge plus. Connections are a big thing too. I’m delivering to these tech companies downtown and I’ve already made a few connections with people there, and I mentioned that I’m in school. They’re like, ‘Oh cool, once you finish school, you should throw in your application. Here’s my name and you can put me down as a reference.’
What advice would you give to new Earning Partners?
Patience is my first piece of advice – the onboarding process is suited to acclimating new drivers to make sure things go smoothly. Drivers may start with smaller orders, but be patient since larger orders do come. Wear a smile when you’re dealing with customers and bring plenty of hot bags! Always remember the hot bags!
Any fun facts you’d like to share about yourself?
I play drums! I’ve been in and out of bands since I was 14-15 years old. I also ride Harley Davidsons on the weekend!
